A new staining method using a hematoxylin, alcian blue and periodic acid-Schiff reaction for demonstrating mucins in gastric glands.

چکیده
Mucous neck cells in the rat stomach which contain neutral mucin were stained with a modified Mayer's hemalum. When alcian blue staining and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reaction preceded hematoxylin staining, mucin-containing fundic gland cells could be distinguished in the same tissue sections: surface mucous cells were positive for PAS reaction and/or alcian blue staining, neutral mucin-containing mucous neck cells were stained with hematoxylin, and acidic mucin-containing mucous neck cells were stained with alcian blue. This alcian blue-PAS-hematoxylin staining sequence represents a useful differential staining method for mucins in the gastric mucosa.

Histological Study of the Oesophagus and Stomach in Grey-Backed Shrike (Lanius tephronotus)
The microstructure of oesophagus and stomach in grey-backed shrike were examined by means of light microscopy. The results showed that the oesophagus glands were mucous glands, the shedding glandular cells and the mucin from the oesophagus glands secreted to the lumen. The number of the glands in the thoracic part was less than that of in the cervical part. The lumens of the glands showed an in...

One of the simplest procedures to demonstrate mucinous substances (acid mucopolysaccharides) in routine histological preparations involves the use of Alcian dyes. Methods involving these dyes have largely. replaced the older, more empirical mucicarmine technique arid are faster and less complicated than the colloidal iron method of Hale,1 which suffers from the possibility of false-positive sta...
متن کاملAlterations in mucin type: an indicator for suspicion of malignant gastric transformation.
Mucins are produced by both benign and malignant gastric epithelium. In general, mucins can be classified into neutral and acidic mucins. The latter are of 2 major types, sulphated (sulphomucins) and carboxylated (sialomucins). A retrospective study was initiated at the Department of Pathology, University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur to histochemically study the mucin profiles of cases of intestinal ...

The distribution of neutral mucins, sialomucins and sulphomucins was determined histochemically in the duodenum, jejunum, ileum and colon of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana). The techniques used were periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), alcian blue/periodic acid-Schiff (AB-PAS), high-iron-diamine/alcian blue (HID-AB), alcian blue at varying pH solutions and alcian blue at high temperature after...
